Day 140: Slowing Down for Kindness

I don’t know about you, but some days I feel like I rush from one thing to the next. The day begins before the sun rises and then it feels like a marathon or a never-ending sprint. I wonder if all the things I pack into one day are really all that necessary. On those sprinting days, which are often, I feel my shoulders tighten, by breath become shallow and my patience running thin. By the end of the day I’m exhausted and not sure when and where the kindness was felt or given. On these days, I must remember to first be compassionate with myself by praising myself for my best effort. Next, I try to do something that feels good, whether that is a swim, a hug from one of my children or a long bath. Lastly, I remind myself that life is a journey, not a race, and if I just slow down, I might be able to feel the kindness.

Learning to slow down for ourselves and for the people in our lives may be the most important and loving gift we can give.

Emoting Kindness

Day 130: Emoting Kindness

“Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves.” – Pema Chodron

Some days and weeks are tougher and more difficult than most. It is these days that we must lean on others as well as tell ourselves that we are doing the best that we can. I have a tendency to think I must have all the answers and I must have them quickly and efficiently, but that does not and has not served me well. There are going to be plenty of challenging occasions that come along in life and we can either hold onto the belief that we must know all the answers and do it alone or we can know that there are people to love and support us and lean on.

Whether you currently find yourself as the one that needs support or you are the one that is able to provide support, having compassion and understanding will lead to love and kindness for both. Love with all your heart. Show yourself compassion everyday. Honor yourself everyday for where you are in your journey. Approve, love, and accept yourself as you are, right in this very moment. Life is too precious and too short to not love yourself through and through.

Spring Kindness

Day 129: Spring Kindness

Happy Spring. Spring forward. Spring into action. Bloom forth. The earth laughs in flowers. Hello Spring.

Spring is a time of new beginnings, a time to bloom, and a time to leave the old behind and embrace the new. Sometimes, we may welcome the changes and be very excited to embark on a new journey. Other times we may find ourselves in the midst of an unwanted and unexpected change that we want to resist because it may seem scary, strange, or novel. When this happens, it does not feel like the typical spring of warmth, fragrant flowers and beauty. However, if we can somehow let go and allow ourselves to move with the current of life instead of resisting, we just may find that we can handle the challenge. Like the seasons, life is ever changing and evolving, and whatever current hell we find ourselves in, will not last forever. Spring will come again.

Be Kind

Day 126: Be Kind

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” – Unknown

I adore the above mentioned quote. We certainly can be anything we desire. If we put our mind to being kind, then that is what will come forth. Of course it begins with thinking kind thoughts and having kind beliefs about ourselves. Once we have a daily practice of loving ourselves with gentleness, understanding and kindness, we can easily be kind to all others. It just takes practice, dedication, and some forgiveness when we fall short of our self imposed standards.

We get one life, make it a kind one.

Remaining Kind

Day 118: Remaining Kind 

“Be kind to unkind people. They need it most.”  Ashleigh Brilliant

Learning to remain kind through challenging situations can be difficult. Remaining kind when someone is shouting at you or when you are in a hurry can feel downright impossible. Think of a situation that really gets you upset, can you learn to remain kind in the face of unkind people, unpleasant situations, and under pressure? Remaining kind is definitely difficult, but completely achievable through practice. There are certain tactics that can work. Think of having a kindness tool chest that helps you when you just want to shout back. Try smiling, walking away, taking 3 deep breaths, taking a time out or pour on an extra thick layer of kindness. What helps me is to think of the situation almost as a game. I try to have fun with it and see if I can change the situation or the person with kindness. See what you can do to keep spreading Kindness!

Kind Encounters

Day 104: Kind Encounters

“Spread love everywhere you go, let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.” Mother Teresa

I made it my mission to be extra kind to everyone today, especially the most unpleasant people. The people that were having a bad day, or a bad moment, or in one case swearing and throwing her arms up at the people on the train platform. I wanted to see if I could pull the kindness out of people by being extra gentle, engaging, and patient. I was able to engage with two different people that were both in a very unhappy place when I encountered them. The first was a computer repair person. He was very grumpy and short with me. I just kept smiling and saying thank you and communicating how much I appreciated what he was doing. By the time he was done with the computer, he was smiling and apologizing for being short with me. I continued to smile and engage him in a conversation that ended with both of us happy and the better for having spent time with each other.

The second incident was on the the train platform. I accidently bumped into a woman, and I quickly apologized. She very angrily said: “Go on, go ahead of me, everyone else is, everyone else is pushing me today, why not you too.” (She also said some words I cannot repeat.) I just smiled. To my surprise she sat next to me and continued to demonstrate her anger. I apologized once again and tried to engage her in friendly conversation. She wasn’t having it. After a few minutes, I tried again, this time she was a little more open, and answered a few of my questions about where she worked in the city, where she commuted from and what she did for work. She went into a very long story about work and how unhappy she was. I remained attentive and listened. After a while, she softened even more and she ended up telling me about her deceased husband, who had passed over 20 years ago. She told me about how they were best friends, challenged each other, and how deep their love was. In the span of 30 minutes, she went from being very angry and upset, to smiling and wishing me the most pleasant rest of my day.

These were two very simple interactions that left me feeling happy, joyful and inspired.

Kind Love

Day 94: Kind Love

Happy Valentine’s Day! February 14th, a day to celebrate love and the people that we love. Love and kindness come from within. Within each of us is an endless source of love, kindness, patience and compassion for all beings. Let us remember that on this day of love, we all have this great and amazing love inside of us everyday, we only need to look in the mirror. Really, go and look in the mirror and say:  I am love. I am kindness.  

All you need is love and kindness.

Kindly Asked to Listen

Day 87: Kindly Asked to Listen

“One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” – Bryant H. McGill

A few years ago my Mother-in-Law gave me a packet of Spiritual Seeds that I poured into a mug that says happy on it. The spiritual seeds have daily intentions and inspirational messages on them. My daughter often comes upstairs to my office and picks one from the mug. Today, she picked the one that says: “Today I choose to listen more intently.” The other side of the card says, “To be present and fully conscious in the now moment requires good listening skills. Give the gift of your full attention when others speak.” She immediately said, “Mom, this one was meant for you!”

She is completely correct. I am not the best at giving her my full and undivided attention. I have that awful disease called multitasking, or at least the illusion of it. I may be able to get many things done at the same time, but at the expense of my daughter and myself. I am missing out on the gift of loving exchange with my daughter. I am also missing out on being present. And if I really think about it, I am missing out on a whole plethora of things: connection, mutual respect, love, joy and the peace that comes with being present.

Kindness to Self:

I think listening to ourselves is the most precious gift we can receive from ourselves. Listening to our inner messages and living our lives from the truth within will bring a bounty of gifts.

Kindness to Others:

Listen. Listen. Listen. Just think of all the wonderful moments, connection, and loving kindness that comes from the simple act of listening. Listening really is one of the kindest things we can do for others.

Kindness to Strangers:

Being open to hear the messages from a different group of people with understanding is quite simply a gift of peace and kindness. Let us all be willing to listen to people with an open heart, ready to embrace all others, especially those that are strange or different.

Kindness to Our Planet:

Go outside, close your eyes and listen. What do you hear? Your breath, the birds, the breeze? Doing this will surely bring you into the present moment, which is where we are.

From Acceptance to Kindness

Day 83: From Acceptance to Kindness

“Be kinder to yourself. And then let your kindness flood the world.” – Pema Chödron

Today has been a very long and difficult day. I do not have much to say that is inspirational. However, I remind myself on these challenging days that I always have the choice of acceptance. If I can choose to accept the challenges with patience, compassion, and self-forgiveness, kindness will unfold. Life is not always a box of chocolates or a warm bath, but by choosing to be kind to  myself I know that I will be able to turn that into kindness for all others or at least my children, as was the case tonight.

Time for a bath!
